The Newcastle Clean Air Zone Toll was activated on January 30, 2023.

The new zone charges up to £50 per day (depending on vehicle).

Check if your vehicle is exempt from CAZ toll charges -  here.

If your vehicle is exempt you will not be charged.

UPDATE (8.1.24): Gateshead Council have helpfully drawn our attention that currently the CAZ charge does not currently apply to "private cars" and that any private car stands under current rules as exempt from the CAZ charge. HOWEVER, what many people would class as a "private car" could still be classified as CAZ chargeable if its V5 Log Book assesses the vehicle as effectively a van. If your vehicle V5 (Log Book) states under "Para 4 (VEHICLE DETAILS) section J" that your vehicle is categorised as "M1" - then your vehicle should be exempt from the CAZ. But if your V5 shows your vehicle under category "N1" (or other) then the CAZ charge would apply. Our advice is to either check your vehicle for CAZ toll charges - here.

Non-exempt vehicles need to pay a toll each and every day the vehicle enters the CAZ zone (assessed from midnight to midnight).

CAZ Toll charges need to be paid online - click here.

Temporary exemptions will no longer be granted for "non-compliant" vans and light goods vehicles.

The CAZ zone rules may very likely be changed into the future to charge all petrol or diesel vehicles inside the CAZ zone and only allow electric vehicles to pass freely.

Our advice to all drivers affected by the new rule changes can be viewed here.
